At our last evening on Zoom we welcomed Shaq and Keiron from Big Belly Kitchen and shared reactions about the art installation in Southside (which has since come to the end of its exhibiting period).
Shaq and Keiron, the creators and chefs of Big Belly Kitchen in Tooting shared how their business began and grew. After a young man was injured due to knife crime close to their business recently, they experienced the shock of this, and looked for a way to respond that could have a positive impact on others. They want to teach young people to cook. They took their barbecue, Caribbean cooking expertise and passion for young people to Swaffield School’s year 5 pupils, and celebrated the anniversary of Windrush with them.
The art installation has now moved on from Southside – but we talked about the impact it had had on people – tears, silence and hope – in looking at the images and positive messages and taking in the grief that has affected so many people over so many years and still continuing in our community due to knife crime.
